Movie Night: You Are What You Eat: Eat a Cruelty-Free Diet

Staff Writer, DL Mullan
Tyson / Food Cruelty
___________________________________

A cruelty-free diet does not mean going vegetarian or vegan. Unless your health demands such restricted diets, then these are not a healthy alternative. Humans are omnivores. We must indulge in eating flesh of animals and fish to remain healthy.

When it comes to videos like this one out of Tyson Foods, people should take notice of how their food is being treated:

Factory farming has become a violent and diseased manufacture of meals. Chickens or any animal in our food chain that is diseased, over bred, or abused in no way should be allowed to be sold to fast food chains or supermarkets.

The United States needs to end the factory farming monopolies and return to the humane and organic practices of small farms. Chickens who are raised with care and love are better for human health.

Diseased meats need to be sprayed with bacteria and viruses in order to make them safe to eat, as is our current practice under the FDA.

Eat smart. Buy as much gmo-free, organic foods as you can afford. That cruelty free, hormone free, chemical free will not only create a better life for its consumers but for the animals themselves.

So today's Movie Night is about taking not only our freedoms back, but our food supply back from the horrible, unclean conditions of profits over humane treatment of our animals.

and Contact the FDA while you are at it.

Healthy food means healthy kids, adults, and cruelty free farming.

Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020

Staff Writer, Nicole Meyer-Greene
Health / Food
______________________________________

The SAD, Standard American Diet, has been updated:
The Dietary Guidelines is required under the 1990 National Nutrition Monitoring and Related Research Act, which states that every 5 years, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) must jointly publish a report containing nutritional and dietary information and guidelines for the general public. The statute (Public Law 101-445, 7 U.S.C. 5341 et seq.) requires that the Dietary Guidelines be based on the preponderance of current scientific and medical knowledge. The 2015-2020 edition of the Dietary Guidelines builds from the 2010 edition with revisions based on the Scientific Report of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and consideration of Federal agency and public comments.

Previous editions of the Dietary Guidelines focused primarily on individual dietary components such as food groups and nutrients. However, people do not eat food groups and nutrients in isolation but rather in combination, and the totality of the diet forms an overall eating pattern. The components of the eating pattern can have interactive and potentially cumulative effects on health. These patterns can be tailored to an individual’s personal preferences, enabling Americans to choose the diet that is right for them. As a result, healthy eating patterns and their food and nutrient characteristics are a focus of the recommendations in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines.

The Dietary Guidelines is designed for nutrition and health professionals to help all individuals ages 2 years and older and their families consume a healthy, nutritionally adequate diet. The information in the Dietary Guidelines is used by policymakers in developing Federal food, nutrition, and health policies and programs. It also is the basis for Federal nutrition education materials designed for the public and for the nutrition education components of HHS and USDA food programs.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is the 8th edition released since 1980 and remains the current edition until the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is released.

Addressing the issue of horizontal gene transfer from a diet containing genetically modified components into rat tissues

Staff Writer, J.J. West
GMOs / Scientific Study
___________________________________

Genetically modified (GM) food crops are considered to have the potential of providing food security especially in developing countries. Scientists have raised concern over the hazards associated with the consumption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). One of these hazards, which have great controversy reports, is the possible horizontal gene transfer from GM-food or feed to human or animal tissues. Many researches were conducted to investigate the presence of some transgenic sequences in animal tissues fed on GM- crops. Many of the inserted genes in the GM-crops are under the control of the promoter of the Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMVP35S) and produce insecticidal proteins. Health hazards are suggested to accompany the ingestion of this promoter. CaMVP35S can function in a wide range of organisms (plants and animals). It has also been demonstrated that the CaMV-P35S promoter sequence can convert an adjacent tissue- and organ-specific gene promoter into a globally active promoter. The present work was conducted to evaluate the possibility of horizontal gene transfer from a diet containing DNA segments from Cauliflower mosaic virus -35S promoter (CaMVP-35S) to the cells of different organs of rats fed for three months on diets containing genetically modified components. Analysis of the results revealed that: 1) ingested fragments from the CaMV-35S promoter incorporated into blood, liver, and brain tissues of experimental rats, 2) The total mean of transfer of GM target sequences increased significantly by increasing the feeding durations, and 3) The affinity of different transgenic fragments from the ingested GM-diet, to be incorporated into the different tissues of rats varied from one target sequence to the other.

The EPA Needs Your Help to Fight the Lies of Climate Change

Staff Writer, DB Holmes
EPA / Carbon / Energy
______________________________

Here's a revised letter to the EPA that anyone can use and enter their vote on:

TO: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

I do NOT support the EPA's historic standards limiting industrial carbon pollution from existing power plants. Carbon is NOT a pollutant.

These new standards are not a vital step in the fight to protect our environment, save lives, and hold polluters accountable.

For these actions do not hold polluters of toxins and poisons to any set safety standard, it only creates a fake scarcity of resources that taxes families with higher energy costs, which is completely and totally unnecessary.

These new standards are the single biggest atrocity our nation has ever taken to combat the devastating effects of fake climate change.

Clean and safe air, drinking water, and food is a must, but eliminating energy availability that only profits a few is incomprehensible, irresponsible, and disgusting.
Please correct the erroneous assertion that Climate Change due to human activities exists. The shutdown of energy plants because of carbon emissions is a travesty and would leave millions without the power they need to survive harsh winters or hot summers.

Get involved and save Earth from the people who aren't interested in real pollution that plagues our planet. They are only interested in their pockets books and repeating the lies about carbon. The only pollution here is of the mind.

Monsanto vs the Monarch: Why Destroy These Beautiful Butterfles?

Staff Writer, Nicole Meyer-Greene
GMO / Pesticides / Butterflies
________________________________

The latest campaign against the chemical and biotech company, Monsanto, is the race to save the Monarch Butterfly. Pollinators like bees, butterflies not only serve an aesthetic purpose but also a food source reproducer. Without pollinators, there are no foods.

Monsanto vs the Monarch: The main cause of the monarch butterfly's decline is the loss of milkweed — its food — in its U.S. breeding grounds, a new study has found. That all but confirms that the spread of genetically modified crops is indirectly killing the monarch. Insect Ecologist Chip Taylor agrees. He also blames GMO crops for the collapse of the Monarch butterfly. If the Monarchs can be said to have a fatal flaw, it’s that they’re are entirely dependent upon milkweed. The long-term loss of the Monarch's milkweed habitat has been due to the adoption of herbicide-tolerant crops. "I don’t think there’s any question about it. The statistics are really quite clear." -Chip Taylor, Insect Ecologist and Founder of Monarch Watch. What price we pay for GMO technology. Plant milkweed! SAVE THE MONARCH!

MSN Canada published on article, Monarch butterfly decline linked to spread of GM crops, which linked GMOs and pesticides to the decline in the population:
The study, published today in the Journal of Animal Ecology, shows this decline in milkweed is the main cause of the monarch's recent population decline, not deforestation in Mexico. If this milkweed loss continues, the study predicts, monarch populations will fall at least another 14 per cent and there is a five per cent chance they will be driven nearly to extinction over the next century .

Study co-author Ryan Norris, a biology professor at the University of Guelph, said that "likely the biggest cause of loss of milkweed is the adoption of genetically modified crops."

Farmers have been increasingly planting corn and soybeans resistant to herbicides, and then applying those herbicides liberally on their fields. That kills off plants between the rows of crops that aren't resistant, such as milkweed.

That's been a big problem for the butterflies. Even now, 67 per cent of milkweed plants in the butterflies' breeding grounds are found in "agriculture-intensive landscapes," the study reported.
In the article, Monsanto vs. the monarchs: The fight to save the world’s most stunning butterfly migration, the conclusion is just as grim. Yet there is hope if people come together and make a difference:
We can’t just convert everything into an agricultural field or an urban environment. We have to maintain the wildlife out there. This is as fundamental as our relationship with nature, but also the reality is about 70 percent of that native vegetation out there is insect pollinated and if you don’t have the insects, you lose the plants, and if you don’t have the plants you lose the things that feed on those plants. So we’ve got to keep this system together. People don’t understand this, but everything’s connected out there and we have to maintain those connections.
So the next time you pull a milkweed or spray pesticides in your yard for a fictional manicured look, remember that you like big corporations are the problem. Be the solution: stop spraying pesticides and grow to love your weeds.

Without milkweed, there is no Monarch Butterfly.

FDA Solves the Radiation of Seafood by Irradiating Seafood, What?

Staff Writer, J.J. West
Food / Radiation
________________________________

In its continuing effort to destroy food and nutrition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to irradiate seafood:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is amending our current food additive regulations to allow the safe use of ionizing radiation on crustaceans (e.g., crab, shrimp, lobster, crayfish, and prawns) to control foodborne pathogens and extend the shelf life. Our action responds to a food additive petition submitted by the National Fisheries Institute. Our decision is based on a rigorous safety assessment that considered 1) potential toxicity, 2) the effect of irradiation on nutrients, and 3) potential microbiological risk that may result from treating crustaceans with ionizing radiation. The evaluation also considered previous evaluations of the safety of irradiation of other foods including poultry, meat, molluscan shellfish, iceberg lettuce, and fresh spinach. This rule covers raw, frozen, cooked, partially cooked, shelled, or dried crustaceans, or cooked, or ready-to-cook, crustaceans processed with spices or small amounts of other food ingredients.

At the maximum permitted dose of 6.0 kiloGray, this new use of ionizing radiation will reduce, but not entirely eliminate, the number of pathogenic (illness causing) microorganisms in or on crustaceans. The maximum dosage of irradiation approved is capable of reducing a number of pathogens that may be found in crustaceans, including Listeria, Vibrio, and E. coli. Irradiation is not a substitute for proper food-handling practices; therefore crustaceans treated with ionizing radiation must be stored, handled, and cooked in the same way as non-irradiated foods.

Under 21 CFR 179.26(c), we require that irradiated foods bear the international symbol for irradiation (radura) and carry the statement "Treated with radiation" or "Treated by irradiation" on the food label. Consumers will continue to be able to identify irradiated foods, including crustaceans, by the presence of the irradiation statement and symbol on the label. For foods not in package form, the logo and phrase must be displayed to the purchaser with either the labeling of the bulk container plainly in view or a counter sign, car, or other appropriate device bearing the information that the product has been treated with radiation. We do not require that multi-ingredient foods that contain ingredients that have been irradiated (e.g., spices) be labeled if the food itself has not been irradiated, nor do we require labeling of irradiated food served in restaurants.
Great, the FDA can not guarantee the safety of food products with or without radiation, but now seafood is more radioactive. This move might be to hide the fact that Fukushima radiation is more prevalent in the food supply than the United States government would like to admit. Radiating seafood can be used to mask the fact that people are finding high levels of radiation in their sushi.

Publicly radiate seafood for safety. Radiation readings cannot be traced to Japan.  Problem solved.

Still one has to wonder if in the United Nation's Codex Alimentarius of food dictatorship and nutrient destruction, if there isn't a chapter called: Do You Like Radiation with your Mercury Poisoning?

The history of Codex Alimentarius (Food Code) began protecting the health of consumers but then the United Nations turned over control to the very corporations that are responsible for creating unhealthy food crises for money making opportunities:
In 2002, the FAO and WHO had serious concerns about the direction of Codex and hired an external consultant to determine its performance since 1962 and to designate which direction to take the trade organization [2]. The consultant concluded that Codex should be immediately scrapped and eliminated. It was at this time that big industry realized the full monetary potential of this organization and exerted its powerful influence. The updated outcome was a toned down report asking Codex to address 20 various concerns within the organization.

Since 2002, the Codex Alimentarius Commission has covertly surrendered its role as an international public health and consumer protection organization. Under the helm of big industry, the sole surreptitious purpose of the new codex is to increase profits for the global corporate juggernauts while controlling the world through food. The implicit understanding of their philosophy is that if you control food, you control the world.

For more information, please read: Dr. Gregory Damato's: Codex Alimentarius: Population Control Under the Guise of Consumer Protection. It's a real eyeopener. It's the TPP of corporate food control.

If you would like to lodge a complaint, please specify: Docket No. FDA-2001-F-0049 (formerly Docket No. 01F-0047). All submissions must include the agency name and docket number.

Being A Prepper: Not for Crazy People Anymore

Staff Writer, DL Mullan
Preparedness / Community Interest
_______________________________

To be fair, preppers aren't crazy. Some are a little extreme, but as the world gets more insane, people's behavior tends to sway toward Newton's Third Law: "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

So a few people push that envelope. For the rest of us on a budget, what does preparedness mean?

FEMA has a good manual online except for the duration of your stockpile. The government states a person should have enough food, water, and necessities for two weeks. It's like FEMA has never been involved with a natural catastrophe before.

Preppers prepare for years. FEMA says a fortnight. What's the real deal?

In the article, Figuring the Size of Your Emergency Fund, the author states:
You ought to have an emergency fund equal to your minimum monthly expenses times at least three months, and preferably six months, and keep it to be stashed where you can get at least a large fraction of within one business day. It's one of the basic rules of personal finance for good reasons.
So if financial consultants say three to six months, but six is better for back up finances, then logic should suggest three to six months worth of goods should be in that equation too.

So in an emergency, you will have money for bills and necessities for stability.

Now, don't we all feel better?

Agriculture Coexistence with GMO's, USDA Commentary Period

Staff Writer, DL Mullan
Nature / Farming
_____________________________

The USDA has opened up a commentary period for people to send their thoughts and opinions to the government about food production.:
USDA Requests Public Input on ‘Agricultural Coexistence.’

USDA published a request for public comments (FR Vol.78, No. 213, Nov. 4, 2013) on how agricultural coexistence in the United States can be strengthened. Comments will be accepted through January 3, 2014. OSA and other organizations have requested a 60-day extension to this deadline. We will notify you if there is an extension. For now, we need you to comment!

How to comment
Comment online at Regulations.gov.
Send comments via postal mail to: Docket No. APHIS-2013-0047, Regulatory Analysis and Development, PPD, APHIS, Station, 3A-03.8, 4700 River Road Unit 118, Riverdale, MD 20737-1238
This opportunity only lasts until January 3rd, 2014 to let the USDA how you feel about GMO crops contaminating the rest of the food supply through big agriculture's farming practices
Non-GMO agriculture has shouldered the burden of contamination for too long. This is our opportunity to tell USDA that it must use its authority to (1) implement mandatory contamination prevention measures to avoid the problem and protect the organic and non-GMO sector, and (2) ensure shared responsibility for the unwanted spread of GE products, including a fair compensation mechanism that does not further burden those who avoid, and sometimes are harmed by, contamination.
Please read the source material before commenting so there is a cohesive understanding of what is being asked of the public.: Seed Broadcast Blog. Then comment away!

This procedure is how things are changed. Let's change farming practices for the better and remove GMO's from our food supply.

What to do: Too much Holiday Food, Not Enough Storage?

Staff Writer, DL Mullan
Health / Lifestyle
_____________________________________

After the holiday feasts are done, you discover yet another sale item you did not have time to cook or use. Be it: potatoes, butter, cheese, or milk. What are you going to do with all that overflow?

Easy: freeze it!

Milk in its regular plastic jug can be thrown in the freezer before opening. Butter and cheese can be tossed into the freezer as well.

Potatoes take a little more planning. With any vegetable some boiling and blanching are in order, but in the end you have saved your perishables for another day.

Fish or Not to Fish, Dinner Decisions

Staff Writer, DL Mullan
Health/Life Style
________________________________________

Many Americans love to put seafood on their plates. Why not? It's supposed to be a healthier alternative to red meat. Plus, seafood tastes wonderful!

Thanks to corporate and government irresponsibility, the oceans of the world have become over fished and polluted. Moreover, the oil spill and subsequent spraying of Correxit in the Gulf of Mexico has left that food source poisoned and some areas dying. Fukashima radiation has made this food source from the Pacific Ocean inedible as well.

Unless the seafood you are eating comes from Alaska or Northern Atlantic areas, seafood is not a viable option for eating anymore. Most fish from private and foreign fisheries are not healthy either.

What to do?

This article was inspired by the "12 fish you should never, ever eat." In reality, any fatty fish will contain a host of carcinogens, PCPs, mercury, and possibly petroleum and Correxit, if from that region.  Fish with less fat to them usually contain less of these horrible chemicals. If you choose farmed fish, then you are now eating antibiotics and other veterinarian pharmaceuticals. Foreign farmed fish are not as regulated as U.S. companies are and their fish could contain other contaminates in addition.

But back to the question of what to do? Research the Gulf Coast and the oil spill before buying any seafood from there. Ask why there is a mainstream media black out of activists if there is truly nothing wrong.

Search how radiation from Japan's failed nuclear reactor is affecting the Pacific Ocean. Ask why the government is not reporting on the radiation levels and has shut down it's detectors on the west coast, especially in key areas.

Ask questions. It's your food. Your health. Your life.
