Correlation Analysis for Total Electron Content Anomalies on 11th March, 2011

1. Introduction
Ionosphere is a shell of a large amount of electrons and it is disturbed by various causes such as volcanic eruptions [Heki, 2006;Dautermann et al., 2009], solar flares [Donnelly, 1976], earthquakes [ Cahyadi and Heki, 2015], and so on. Analyzing Total Electron Content (TEC) data is one of the most popular method to monitor the ionosphere. TEC data contains the number of electrons integrated along the line of sight between the GNSS satellites and the observation stations on the ground. Japan has a dense GNSS observation network (the GNSS earth observation network, GEONET) to collect daily TEC.

High-power ELF radiation generated by modulated HF heating of the ionosphere 

can cause Earthquakes, Cyclones and localized heating

The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is currently the most important facility used to generate extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic radiation in the ionosphere. In order to produce this ELF radiation the HAARP transmitter radiates a strong beam of high-frequency (HF) waves modulated at ELF. This HF heating modulates the electrons’ temperature in the D region ionosphere and leads to modulated conductivity and a time-varying current which then radiates at the modulation frequency. Recently, the HAARP HF transmitter operated with 3.6GW of effective radiated power modulated at frequency of 2.5Hz. It is shown that high-power ELF radiation generated by HF ionospheric heaters, such as the current HAARP heater, can cause Earthquakes, Cyclones and strong localized heating.

Get ready. Get set! Cold? The solar inactivity is allowing the Earth to have a cooler summer than ones seen in recent years. That does not mean we get much of a break from earthquakes. A negative coronal hole is almost Earth facing and there should be another outbreak of tremors.

Storms all around. Thanks to the last CME and filament eruption, we have hurricanes formed and forming in the Pacific Ocean.

The monsoon has taken a break, but there is a convergence over the Midwest to look out for.

Potential Correlation Between +M8 Earthquakes and Solar Polar Fields

(August 3, 2014 – Columbus, OH) KAHB LLC announces the discovery of a potential method for predicting the largest (+M8) earthquakes, using polar magnetic fields of the sun.

Using more than 35 years of data from the Wilcox Solar Observatory at Stanford University and from the United States Geological Survey, a model was constructed using patterns discerned in the polar magnetic fields of the sun. These patterns in solar magnetism were informally observed to match with the occurrence of large earthquakes on our planet, so mathematical modeling was used to formally develop an algorithm describing those relationships.

Dr. Christopher Holloman’s team of researchers at The Ohio State University Statistical Consulting Service was able to construct model a that exhibited very strong agreement between solar magnetism patterns and the occurrence of large earthquakes. Formal testing of the model can only be performed by examining its performance over the next few years, but the agreement was sufficient to suggest that a relationship likely exists between solar polar fields, or magnetic fields associated with the north and south poles of the sun, and large earthquakes.

“The strong agreement of the model was surprising to everyone involved,” says Ben Davidson of KAHB, “but we have to understand the limitations of the analysis at this stage.” According to Davidson, this model is not predictive at this time; the analysis relies on data from the Wilcox Solar Observatory which requires at least 10 days to update past real-time, and is usually updated monthly. “The data is averaged in 10-day periods, so when a large earthquake happens, we still need to perform a retrospective analysis. What we have now is a rubric for gauging the correlations between these events into the future.”

“The most striking aspect of the model is that it is, for the most part, relatively simple,” says Dr. Holloman. “The patterns observed in the solar magnetic fields aren’t the result of applying some obscure mathematical functions. The algorithm is based on things like peaks and troughs in solar cycles or the absolute strength of one of the poles at a particular time. Such simple models are more often predictive than more complex models, and we are eager to see how the predictions play out over the next few years.”

In this retrospective analysis, the null hypothesis was that there was no relationship between the solar polar fields and M8+ earthquakes. Under this hypothesis, the fraction of days identified as residing in windows with increased likelihood of seismicity, as a percentage of the total days over the 35 years, would include a similar percentage of the large earthquakes over that same period. The analysis showed 41.6% of the days residing in these windows captured just under 78.8% of the M8+ earthquakes. “We cannot formally invalidate the null hypothesis, but the performance of the developed model is extremely encouraging. We believe it is likely to be validated by future data.”

As interesting as predicting large earthquakes would be, the lone prospective aspect of the model thus far involves periods of time when +M8 earthquakes are less likely to occur. These periods tend to occur following magnetic reversal of the solar fields at the sunspot peak of the ~11-year cycle of the sun, and could have significant implications for civil engineering projects near earthquake zones, mining, drilling, and other applications for which it may be advantageous to know when earth is less-likely to have a large earthquake.

Dr. Kongpop U-yen states that this analysis “suggests that their [M8+ earthquakes] major trigger mechanisms are external to the Earth. This may be linked to the electrical connections between the Earth and the Sun. Many seismologists have detected the fluctuation in electric fields in the Earth’s crust associated with earthquakes. Such an idea can be extended beyond the Earth’s crust toward the ionosphere and Van Allen radiation belts as they all move along together. NASA scientists also hypothesize that there are giant electric fields that power the Van Allen radiation belts, and have suggested that the Sun is the major contributor.” The connection is no longer limited to the surrounding space or Earth’s atmosphere, but to the penetration toward the Earth’s core as well. “After looking at the complete data set, it is not difficult for anyone to see that there is a connection. To be sure we did not fool ourselves, we back up this finding using verifiable statistical analysis.”

Earth’s magnetosphere has been weakening since the 1600s, and Dr. U-yen is curious about the recent results from the ESA’s SWARM mission having a role to play in these earthquake correlations; “recently Earth’s magnetic fields are weakening more rapidly than in the past, making us more susceptible to space weather than ever before.”

The group is preparing a manuscript for submission based on the results of the study, which they hope will be accepted for publication shortly thereafter. Commenting further on the simplicity of the algorithm, Davidson notes, “We look at peaks in polar force and reversal of polarity – it really is that simple.”

Although we at the VDP Gazette do not subscribe to Climate Change, Suspicious Observers has some nice videos on the subject for those readers who are interested. 

The sun spots released a CME yesterday. Some have decayed today; still others have a chance to become a CME if they have the energy to do so. The sun wants to take its vacation in a Grand Minimum.

Storms have ramped up thanks to some solar energy. Earthquakes could be on the rise as coronal holes are Earth facing this weekend. 

The monsoon is back. Poor Buckeye last night saw a microburst that took out some RV's. More storms and unstable atmosphere for the next several days.

A M2.5 Solar Flare did occur this morning. Our sun is somewhat awake. The coronal hole stream coming toward us should give earthquakes a nudge.

The sun has still not completed it's polar shift reversal. Filaments are destabilizing and causing some eruptions but as of yet nothing catastrophic headed our way. Sleepy star.

Without energy from solar flares, storms in the Pacific are dissipating however some notable earthquakes have been felt.

At solar maximum, the sun is quiet. Even with increased sun spots, the solar flares are not active. Some hurricanes and typhoons are being created especially in the Pacific Ocean but with little energy from solar activity, there probably won't be a ramp up in their strength.

A light monsoonal weekend is ahead. Remember to set out your Bulk Trash for Pick Up starting on Monday. 

Models are in agreement that we are in for a fairly quiet weekend monsoon-wise. Activity will pick up again on Monday. Drier upper-level air moved in Thursday capping the development of storms over the Valley. Look for warmer temperatures as a tradeoff to the reduced humidity. Again, the break will be short-lived as storms will be more capable of holding together while moving off of the Rim late Sunday and Monday. Until then, expect relatively good PM10 levels. Ozone concentrations may reach the middle Moderate range with the target area for highest concentrations in the north and north east part of the forecast area.

A sleepy sun, Big Dipper cosmic rays, and Typhoon Arthur, oh my! Are we headed for a pole shift or even a massive, Super-Flood across the Earth? The climate and Earth is changing but changing from the outside in, even though Global Warming Alarmist and Climate Change Fanatics want you to believe it's all because of mankind. Well, the geoengineering and polluting are thanks to governments, corporations, and trade deals.

So what is humanity to do?

Humanity needs to realize that we need to clean up our act, our planet, and our politics. Whatever is happening now is a natural variation, not some panic induced action. Maybe humanity needs to change our politics and laws to help Mother Earth without condemning the world's population to poverty, wars, and drugs.

Record Ice on the Horizon 

 Looks like the Arizona Monsoon has been complicated by two Lows, one over the Colorado River Valley and the other over New Mexico. Our High is now more over Colorado than the Four Corners Region. Moisture sill continue to be pushed up into the state but will produce storms over the higher terrains of Northern and Eastern Arizona. Still watch out for those Dust Storms throughout the week. 

 Some spacweather to talk about as Earth has received some gamma ray bursts in the last few weeks. The solar wind has slowed down and not much activity has been seen from the Coronal Holes or the mixed polarity sunspots. Minor filament eruptions, but Earth can handle any sidewinders.
